“Social media is an empowered medium of directly communicating with the people and it has become necessary for police to adopt it,” a police spokesperson said, quoting Mr Ahmed.

In a circular issued to all senior officers in the State, UP Director General of Police Javeed Ahmed has instructed them to “officially” take to twitter as an effective and prompt redressal mechanism of public grievances. In his six-point directive, Javeedinstructs all district police chiefs to open twitter accounts in the name of the concerned district police and configure it with respective CUG (official) mobiles of SPs. The updates of twitter thus will directly be monitored by the SPs and they will be able to feel the pulse of people and keep a tab on activities of their juniors too.

For uniformity, the district police have been asked to use design and header used by @Uppolice, which has 40.3 K followers already. The State police would also be serviced with a permanent social media cell, where officials would work in two shifts from 8 am to 10 pm daily. Twitter handle of @Uppolice, DGP and IG Lucknow zone A Satish Ganesh are already popular on Twitter and people are not only posting their problems but also getting solutions swiftly through the platform.

Also, the handles areused to timely update the public of the good work done by the force and also the media which seldom talks about the success stories of UP Police. What’s more! The state police will soon be organising a training session to familiarise the officials with social media usage and its benefits.

This is a brilliant move by the prompt and digitally-growing AkhileshYadav led UP government. Moreover this is setting an example for other states to follow.Kudos to this smart move by UP Police. The state looks forward to SMARTER Policing mechanism in #DigitalUP.
